Description of the Booter Dal Halwa (Split Chickpea Halwa) is one of my all-time favorites! Soft, fudgy, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious, it’s a dessert that’s indulgent yet comforting. Perfect for festive occasions or as a special treat for your next dawat, this halwa is truly a labor of love.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup soaked Chana dal
  • 3.5 cups milk
  • 1 cinnamon
  • 1/4tsp cardamom powder
  • In a pan add 3 -4 tbsp ghee (or more if needed)
  • 1 cup sugar or condensed milk

Garnish

  • Top with silver sheet (optional)
  • 8-10 sliced amonds Almonds,
  • 5-6 Cashews chopped
  • 1tbsp Coconut
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1.5 tsp ghee

Directions:

  1. Soak the chana dal (Split chickepeas) in water for 5–6 hours or overnight.
  2. In a pot, add the milk and soaked chana dal, and bring it to a boil. ( Should take about an hour to soften)
  3. Once the dal has softened, transfer it to a blender and blend until smooth.
  4. In a pan, heat the ghee. Add the blended chana dal and stir for 5–6 minutes until the ghee is fully incorporated, the mixture smells toasty, and the color changes slightly to golden brown.
  5. Add the cardamom powder and sugar, and keep stirring until the halwa looks glossy.
  6. Once done, transfer the halwa to a flat plate or container. Flatten it using a spoon or your hand.
  7. Garnish and let it set in the fridge for 2 hours.
  8. Once cooled, cut into diamond or square shapes.
  9. For the garnish:
  10. In a separate pan, heat ghee.
  11. Add chopped nuts, coconut, and sugar. Cook for 1–2 minutes, or until everything looks toasty and lightly golden.
  12. Garnish the halwa with the nut mixture and optionally add silver leaf.
